If counter space is tight, the narrowest machine we found is the Breville Bambino, at roughly 6 inches wide. The Bambino Plus, De’Longhi Stilosa and Gaggia Classic E24 are each about 8 inches wide. The Breville Barista Express is much bigger, at about 12.5 inches wide, but it includes the grinder you would otherwise have to place separately.

How reliable are these numbers

Manufacturers do not publish sizes the same way. Breville’s own pages list the same measurements in a different order for different machines, and retailers sometimes measure with the portafilter or lid in place. So we cross-checked each machine against at least two sources and show a range where they differ by an inch or more. Measure your space and check the manual’s diagram before you buy.

Which one fits which space

  • Very narrow counter or shelf: the Bambino is the slimmest. See Bambino vs Bambino Plus for what the Plus adds.
  • Shallow counter, with a cabinet overhead: the Gaggia is the shortest front to back at about 9.5 to 10.6 inches deep, but it is one of the taller machines at about 14 inches, so check the clearance above it.
  • Low cabinet overhead: the Stilosa is the lowest of the group at about 11.2 inches.

Do not forget the grinder

The Bambino, Bambino Plus, Stilosa and Gaggia have no built-in grinder, so a separate grinder needs its own spot. A built-in grinder, as on the Barista Express, saves that space but makes the machine wider and taller. Our guide to built-in versus separate grinders covers the trade-off, and our grinder guide lists options.

Leave room to use it

Allow space to lift the lid and remove the water tank, to pull the portafilter out, and to place a cup under the spout. A machine that fits when it is sitting still may not be usable under a low cabinet.
