Built-in vs Separate Espresso Grinder

Research-Based Guide. We have not tested these products ourselves. This page summarizes manufacturer pages and manuals and says so where a fact is missing. Prices change often, so any price we mention is approximate and was seen on November 2, 2026. Check the current listing before you buy.

A built-in grinder means one purchase and one machine to find room for. A separate grinder costs more steps but lets you choose, upgrade and replace the grinder on its own. If you want the simplest start, a machine with a built-in grinder is reasonable. If you want to improve over time, a separate grinder gives you more room to grow.

A fair comparison of setup cost

At the prices we saw on November 2, 2026, the Breville Barista Express was about $500. A Breville Bambino at about $300 plus a Baratza Encore ESP at about $200 also came to about $500. Prices move, so add up the live prices yourself before you decide.

What you gain with a separate grinder

  • You can upgrade the grinder or the machine on its own.
  • If one part fails, you replace that part, not the whole setup.
  • You can pair one grinder with several machines over time.

What you gain with a built-in grinder

  • One purchase and one warranty. Breville lists a 1-year limited warranty on the Barista Express.
  • The grinder and dosing are matched to the machine.
  • Fewer separate items to find room for.

What the makers document

Breville lists 16 grind settings, a 54 mm portafilter, PID temperature control and a pressure gauge on the Barista Express. Baratza lists 40 mm conical steel burrs, a 300 g hopper and a 1-year warranty on the Encore ESP. The Bambino pairs with it but includes no grinder. See the Barista Express review, the Encore ESP review and Bambino vs Barista Express.

How to decide

  • You want the simplest start and have counter room: built-in.
  • You expect to upgrade or want to choose your grinder: separate.
  • You are on a tight budget: compare the live prices of both setups.
